Πλοκή

Μια απλή και άβγαλτη γυναίκα η Κάθριν, ζει με τον συναισθηματικά απόμακρο πατέρα της Dr. Austin Sloper το 1840 στη Νέα Υόρκη. Οι μέρες της είναι κενές και ανούσιες, μέχρι που μπαίνει στη ζωή της ο Μόρις Τάουνσεντ, ένας γοητευτικός και φιλόδοξος αριβίστας, που έχει στραμμένα τα μάτια του στην καρδιά της Κάθριν και στη σημαντική κληρονομιά της.
